Warning: There is No Evidence that People Vaccinated Against COVID-19 Cannot Donate Blood

Vaccination against COVID-19 does not prevent vaccinated individuals from donating blood, according to health specialists.

Verification Summary:

A claim suggests that vaccinated individuals cannot donate blood. However, after verification by AFC with specialists, this claim is not true.

Detailed Verification:

Why are these rumors false?

Dr. Louis Médard Ouarandji told AFC: “There is no link between this; blood transfusion has nothing to do with the COVID-19 vaccine.”

He added, “On the contrary, vaccinated individuals are encouraged to donate blood to protect those who are not vaccinated because their blood already contains antibodies against COVID-19. These are false rumors aimed at discouraging volunteers from practicing good health behaviors.”

Augustin Dibert, health promotion advisor at WHO, stated: “No study has demonstrated that vaccinated individuals cannot donate blood. There are no barriers to donating blood, except for age.”

Beyond health specialists, French information sites also address this issue. According to our research on news sites such as France Info and Libération, “It is possible to donate blood after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine without any waiting period. The donation might be postponed if the person tests positive for COVID-19, but they can donate 14 days after.”

COVID-19 vaccines do not prevent volunteer donors from giving blood. On the contrary, according to health specialists, these actions are vital. Donating blood today can save lives tomorrow.
