No, Consuming Chili Peppers Does Not Cause Hemorrhoids

Faux Badge

A rumor circulating by word of mouth claims that consuming chili peppers causes hemorrhoids. This is false, according to health specialists and patients with this condition.

The rumor states: “Consuming chili peppers causes hemorrhoids.” Be cautious of this information.

Verification:

To separate fact from fiction, AFC contacted the Health Promotion Advisor at the WHO office in the Central African Republic, the Head of the Nutrition and Food Hygiene Service at the Primary Health Care Directorate, and several individuals suffering from this condition. None of them confirmed the rumor.

Dr. Mbary Siolo Mada Bebelou, Head of the Nutrition and Food Hygiene Service at the Primary Health Care Directorate, stated via WhatsApp on March 27, 2023:

“Chili peppers do not cause hemorrhoids. However, chili can cause pain if fragments of chili are not fully digested and come into contact with existing hemorrhoids.”

Augustin Dibert, Health Promotion Advisor at WHO, added:

“It is not the chili itself that causes the disease. Instead, during a hemorrhoid flare-up, it is advisable to avoid spicy foods such as chili, curry, pepper, and other spices that can cause vein dilation and a burning sensation. Certain foods should be avoided if you have hemorrhoids.”

In line with this, a patient with hemorrhoids shared:

“I am Cameroonian living in the CAR. Since childhood, I have not consumed chili, but I have hemorrhoids. When I do consume chili, the reaction is immediate; I experience bloody stools and suffer for at least five hours,” said Inoussa Pékarou.

An article published by VITAL notes: “Constipation is the primary cause of hemorrhoid flare-ups, as it leads to repeated straining to pass stools. Additionally, a low-fiber diet and insufficient hydration can harden stools, making their passage difficult and contributing to flare-ups. Some foods seem to exacerbate flare-ups, including meats, spicy dishes, coffee, tea, colas, and various alcoholic beverages.”

The rumor that excessive consumption of chili peppers causes hemorrhoids is false, according to experts on the condition.
