Are disinfectants the cause of irritations in the palms of the hands?

Faux Badge

An information shared in WhatsApp groups, accompanied by an image, claims that disinfectants for COVID-19 have caused irritations in the palms of the hands. This is false, as confirmed by health specialists to AFC.

The post’s caption reads: “Dangerous disinfectants are in circulation, causing irritations in users’ palm of hands.” Beware! Such information is intended to mislead public opinion.

Verification:

In an interview with AFC, Dr. Nebanga Valentin, Head of the Health Promotion Service at the Ministry of Health and Population, refutes this claim:

“We have not heard of this issue. Even if it were true, we would have informed the public in advance.”

Augustin Dibert, Health Advisor at the WHO, also explained: “We have not received any reports or complaints about the disinfectants used by the public. The irritations reported by these individuals are due to the use of dirty water.”

Further research on this issue shows that articles from Santé-Travail state: “Disinfectants containing active biocidal substances can cause contact dermatitis, irritation, or allergic reactions, and less frequently, contact urticaria. Disinfectants are most often used in healthcare, cleaning, agro-food sectors, agriculture, hospitality, and the pharmaceutical industry.”

Recommended by health authorities to reduce the rapid spread of COVID-19, this hydro-alcoholic solution, composed of 70% alcohol, indeed does not mix well with sunlight. Therefore, follow the instructions given by health authorities, as barrier measures remain the only means to protect yourself and others against COVID-19.
