How we are funded

Since our creation in 2020, we have evolved thanks to the financial and material support of the NGO Internews Centrafrique as part of the Connect project.

From October 2021 to January 2022, we received support from FREE PRESS UNLIMITED in the amount of 4,500 euros over a 4-month period. This partnership was exclusively dedicated to the drafting and publication of factual or verified content.

During the years 2021-2022, AFC was able to secure a project amounting to 40,000 euros through a call for proposals launched by the OIF. The project involved the twinning of Francophone initiatives to combat disinformation with funding from the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), in collaboration with RMCC and Congo Check in the DRC.

In 2021, we benefited from technical support from Canal France International CFI (a French media development organization) which assisted us through a series of capacity-building and experience-sharing sessions.

During the years 2021-2023, another support partner joined Centrafrique Check: MINUSCA, which sequentially funded 4 activities of the synergy of Fact-Checking journalists, encompassing media outlets such as Centrafrique Check, the Association of Central African Bloggers (ABCA), and the Consortium of Journalists for Combating Disinformation (CJLCD).

  • Activity 1: Awareness-raising for young leaders in the 1st and 2nd districts of Bangui, Amount 1,500,000 FCFA
  • Activity 2: Awareness-raising for young leaders in the 3rd and 4th districts of Bangui, Amount 1,500,000 FCFA
  • Activity 3: Awareness-raising for young leaders in the 5th district of Bangui, Amount 1,200,000 FCFA
  • Activity 4: Awareness-raising for students in Bangui, Amount 600,000 FCFA

Additionally, we benefited from two waves of funding from Internews:

  • The first wave amounted to 19,000 dollars (from March 1 to August 31, 2022)
  • The second wave of funding amounted to 14,000 dollars (from March 24 to June 31, 2023)

In March 2023, we marked the signing date of the grant agreement between Centrafrique Check and NED (National Endowment For Democracy) in the amount of 25,000 dollars for a period of 9 months (March 2023 to February 2024).

At the moment, Centrafrique Check is funded through two main sources:

  1. Contributions from founding members;
  2. Production and training partners: Internews, CFI, MINUSCA, and NED (National Endowment for Democracy)

Total expenditures incurred from 2020-2023: 64,625,000 Franc CFA

Percentage of our budget dedicated to writing: 40%

Percentage of our budget dedicated to training: 30%

Percentage of our budget dedicated to human and local resources: 20%

Percentage of our budget dedicated to communication: 10%

Centrafrique Check does not accept any funding from the Central African government, political parties, or political leaders. This is to ensure our independence.
