Coronavirus: False, the donation from Jack Ma to the Central African Republic does not pose any risk of contamination

Among the conspiracy theories circulating in the Central African Republic (CAR) about the coronavirus, one concerns the donation from Chinese billionaire Jack Ma. Some internet users falsely claim that the materials received by the Central African Republic pose a risk of COVID-19 contamination. However, these are merely falsehoods, as confirmed by health specialists.

“These health materials should be checked before use, and they should be sent back because they are meant to unleash a wave of contamination in the Central African Republic,” claim proponents of this theory on social media.

This batch of materials, consisting of test kits, masks, and protective equipment, arrived in the Central African Republic on the morning of Sunday, March 30.

WHO in the Central African Republic reassures: zero danger

To address these concerns, our editorial team contacted the World Health Organization (WHO) representation in the Central African Republic, which assured the purpose and safety of these donations concerning COVID-19. “This is a donation made to the African Union in good faith. China has always been a faithful friend to the countries of the Global South. It’s unfortunate to try to undermine this aid,” said Mr. Dibert from WHO Central Africa’s communication team. WHO is a key partner of the Central African government, alongside other organizations, in the fight against COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health also reassures

Dr. Modeste Woza, head of the emergency commission against COVID-19 in the CAR, affirmed the safety and compliance of this material: “There is no major risk to be concerned about; these interpretations regarding this donation are in bad faith,” he told our editorial team. It is worth noting that these donations were distributed to several African countries before the Central African Republic received its share. They are part of an immediate response initiative by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma, president and founder of Alibaba, who aims to support the fight against COVID-19.

In the face of this pandemic, opinions differ and can lead to misinformation. Protect yourself not only against COVID-19 but also against false information. Fear and misinformation could cause more harm than the coronavirus.
